The Government of the Hong Kong SAR co-ordinates with Mainland authorities to implement various measures to facilitate enterprises and general public of the two places in handling intellectual property matters.
With effect from 1 January 2023, Hong Kong applicants filing invention patent applications in the Mainland which meet the relevant criteria may request prioritised examination of their applications by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) under a pilot project.
Since 30 June 2025, Hong Kong’s I&T sector seeking patent protection in the Mainland and fulfilling the relevant criteria may submit patent pre-examination requests to the Shenzhen Intellectual Property Protection Center. Upon passing the pre-examination, their patent applications can enter the expedited examination channel of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), significantly reducing the time required for the examination process.
